PROBLEM
Traditional mass spectrometry, which analyzes biological samples in a laboratory, requires time-consuming processes, expensive equipment and user expertise.
SOLUTION
Purdue University researchers have developed patent-pending methods that deliver a biological sample to a mass spectrometer without sample preparation. It can be used outside a laboratory by nonexperts with minimal training.
The panels and processes have been used in research studies that have been published in more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. Applications for the food industry include certifying beef quality, determining the type of feed provided to cattle, tenderness of the meat and other characteristics.
