Trask Innovation Fund recipients

February 5, 2024
It can take years for an innovative idea to advance far enough to garner industry attention. There are many challenges to overcome during this time, including technology obsolescence and an innovator feeling dispirited by a lack of progress. The Trask Innovation Fund can address these challenges by providing faculty with focused funds to translate a research discovery toward a viable product solution. It complements several other resources Purdue Innovates provides to university inventors and entrepreneurs.

LAY LANGUAGE
Did you know around $3 million from the Trask Innovation Fund has been awarded to more than 80 Purdue University innovators between 2013 and 2023? This funding from the Purdue Innovates Incubator supports researchers between the time of innovation creation and marketplace adoption, known as the “valley of death.” The application deadline for the next round of funding is Feb. 16. Information about project proposal applications is online.

PROBLEM
Purdue University researchers are developing four patent-pending innovations to autonomously detect defects in industrial pipelines; to engage and incentivize residential communities to reduce home energy use; to improve upon the gold standard to remove obstructions that cause stroke; and to reduce the severity of arthritis.

SOLUTION
The Trask Innovation Fund, managed by Purdue Innovates Incubator, has awarded $150,000 to four short-term projects to strengthen the appeal of these patent-pending inventions for commercial use.
